The Week in Celebrity Fashion

From film festivals in France to Lady Gaga wearing a bubble machine in London, there’s so much to discuss, dear readers.

There is nothing about a giant, tent-like gown covered in stars and seashells that should work, but of course the impeccable combination of Cate Blanchett and Dior couture makes me absolutely love it. This isn’t a dress for your ordinary starlet, and it has to fit perfectly or else she’d look like she’s wearing a couch. (Also known as “Kim Kardashian at the Met Gala Syndrome.)

An absolutely heavenly dress – she’s working the wispy, ethereal thing fabulously. The sleeves and the flare of the skirt are particularly beautiful. But I think the lovely Ms. Blanchett could have gone with a slightly more delicate and interesting shoe.

I actually love this bizarre spiderweb effect that seems to be exploding all over Cate’s dress. But I think the asymmetrical hemline is too much – the dress clearly has enough going on.

MICHELLE OBAMA in Washington, DC

I can’t get enough of this mixed-printed dress on Michelle Obama. The First Lady knows a thing or two about power-clashing. And I wish we could see more of her shoes, but the purple color is flawless.

LADY GAGA in London

Get ready for a half-dozen Gaga looks – and I swear, this is only like 25% of what she’s worn this week. The woman is a promotional machine, as evidenced by the fact that she is walking down the street WEARING A BUBBLE MACHINE. I find this hilarious and amazing and above all, supremely fun. And her shoes are terrific in a “Spice Girls go to outer space” sort of way.

From the neck down, Gaga’s doing her best Queen Elizabeth impression, and I am loving it. Mainly because I’d kill for that Vivienne Westwood suit. And notice, even Gaga has succumbed to the power of the Summer of the White Pump. Sadly, a mermaid appears to have thrown up all over Lady Gaga’s wig.

I am a little bit obsessed with this weird little coat. The color and texture are incredible, the shoulders are ridiculous in the most Gaga way possible, and the short wig is one of my favorites. (Yes, I have favorite Lady Gaga wigs, and if you wrote about all the crazy-ass shit she wears, you would, too.)

Aside from the crooked, uncomfortable-looking bra, I have to say, I kind of love what she’s wearing. The couture embellishments are breathtaking, even if everything else is fairly standard (for Gaga, not for normal human beings).

I wish this crazy, futuristic houndstooth jumpsuit wasn’t eight sizes too small on her, because I would have loved this look, mouse ears and all. Alas, fit is everything, and even Gaga can’t pull off that belt.

Those glasses are fucking stupid, and the sleeves and pant legs are way too long on her. What’s the point in wearing couture if you’re not going to have it tailored to actually fit you?

LILY COLLINS in Mexico City
top and skirt by Rachel Zoe, shoes by Brian Atwood

I am all about this modern art deco dress, but Lily should have had a lot more fun with the footwear. The dress is statement-making, but still simple enough that it called for something more than black pumps.

Probably my least favorite thing she’s worn on her epic press tour. I think the black embellishments crawling up her arms look very strange, and something about the placement of everything feels off.

GEORGIA MAY JAGGER in Sydney
jacket and shorts by Sass & Bide, shoes by Willow

I can’t even handle how much I love this little gold shorts suit, which has a futuristic-disco vibe to it that I love. The shoes are too much for anyone else to pull off, but when you’ve got legs for days like Georgia, they actually work.

CARA DELEVINGNE in Shanghai
suit by Burberry

The models were rocking all kinds of fabulous suits this week, with Cara Delevingne rocking a crisp white Burberry tux. It’s flawless, but again, I’d like to request a shoe with a little more personality.

VICTORIA BECKHAM in Los Angeles
skirt by Isabel Marant, purse by Victoria Beckham, shoes by Giuseppe Zanotti

I would kill for that skirt. This whole look has me so excited for autumn, because fall fashion is my absolute favorite. Give me sweaters and plaids and boots and blazers and basically everything Posh is wearing here – I’m ready.

MIRANDA KERR in New York City

I’m not sold on the fringed bag, but those sandals are to die for, and they bring that casually elegant street style vibe that Miranda always nails to that stunning blue dress.

Maybe a little too kitschy, but it’s cute and the styling is sleek and modern.

SELENA GOMEZ in Los Angeles
dress by Vera Wang, jewelry by Lorraine Schwartz, shoes by Jimmy Choo

Selena wears it well, but the shape of this dress is a little bit awkward. I dig the purple nails and the sexy shoes, though.

OLIVIA PALERMO in New York City
dress by Catherine Malandrino, belt by BCBG Max Azria, shoes by Christian Dior

True to form, Olivia is always wearing at least one too many accessories. Every piece is beautiful, but the laser-cut dress is a lot of look itself – the purse just competes for attention.

HAYDEN PANETTIERE in New York City
dress by Alexander McQueen, shoes by Saint Laurent

Photo: Splash News

Oh, Hayden, no. I don’t know who told you that anything about your hair is working, because from cut to color, they were fucking lying to you. Your dress is so very many sizes too tight, and those shoes are an eyesore and clash terribly with everything else you’re wearing. Just stop doing literally everything that you’re doing, fashion-wise, and I think you might be okay.
