The Week in Celebrity Fashion, Part 1

It’s been a fabulous week on the red carpet, dear readers.

ZOE SALDANA at the ALMA Awards
gown by Gucci, shoes by Brian Atwood

Breathtaking. The color is a dream, the draping is effortlessly beautiful, and the metallic detailing on the belt gives the look that killer hard-meets-soft vibe that looks so damn good on Zoe. The matching cocktail ring and earrings? To die for.

AMY ADAMS in Los Angeles
gown by Roksanda Ilincic, purse by Fred Leighton, shoes by Casadei

Amy so rarely gives us her soft and subtle sexy side, but when she does, it’s delectable. She’s tiny as can be, but her arms look lean and strong instead of emaciated and skeletal like so many of her peers. The draping on this dress is divine, her little purse is adorable, and the hair and makeup are as good as ever. Now go put on a real pair of shoes, darling, and leave the silly putty platforms behind.

CAMILLA BELLE in New York City
dress by Michael Kors, shoes by Christian Louboutin

Fabulous. The gold shoes are silly, but that aqua clutch is delicious with the gold dress.

EMMA WATSON on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon
dress by J. Mendel

Killing it. Let’s get the close-up for the full impact.

Bam. Is there a dress better cut for Emma’s silhouette? Look how fantastic her arms and legs look; look at that teensy little waist. It’s not as if her fabulous figure is hard to dress, but this is perfection.

EMMA STONE in New York City
top and pants by Calvin Klein

Photo: Billy Farrell/BFAnyc/Sipa

I’m not a Calvin Klein gal, but it was the after-party for his fashion show, so the label is practically a wardrobe requirement for the evening. Anyway, the green is absolutely breathtaking on her, and she’s pulling off this chic, modern simplicity that I’m just eating up. I’m not convinced the shoes were the best choice for this outfit, but I love the cut of that top on her.

CATHERINE, DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE in the Solomon Islands
dress by Jonathan Saunders, hat by Jane Taylor, shoes by L.K. Bennett

Photo: tomandlorenzo.com

The dress is fantastic, but all the white and ivory accessories make the Democracy Diva a sad girl.

CATHERINE, DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE in Malaysia
dress by Temperley London, shoes by L.K. Bennett

A very pretty, very Kate dress. But with her hair up and no accessories, it errs on the aging side, even though the dress is youthful and romantic.

dress by Raoul, shoes by L.K. Bennett

Would a non-beige pair of shoes kill you, Duchess? Because your current shoe collection is slowly killing me.

JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT in New York City
suit by Alexander McQueen

Photo: tomandlorenzo.com

Not every man can pull off the brown plaid crushed-velvet-looking suit. But JGL is no ordinary man.

DIANE KRUGER in New York City

Photo: Billy Farrell/BFAnyc/Sipa

Love the dress (on Diane, and probably no one but Diane), but the shoes pull too much focus.

JENNIFER MORRISON at the Creative Arts Emmys
gown by Romona Keveza

Photo: tomandlorenzo.com

Fit is everything, Jennifer. No one cares how expensive or beautiful your gown is if it’s two sizes too large on you, particularly when it’s a gown we’ve seen many times before.

KATE MARA in New York City
dress by Miu Miu, collar by Dannijo, shoes by Brian Atwood

Photo: Neilson Barnard/Getty

Cute dress, love the collar in an obnoxious hipster sort of way. But the simple black pumps are just that – way too simple.

JESSICA ALBA in New York City
dress by Valentino, shoes by Casadei

Photo: Justin Campbell/Startraksphoto.com

Just because it’s Valentino doesn’t mean it’s the dress for you, Jessica. The pussy bow and the stripes and mixed prints and lace? It’s a lot of look, and you tend to shine in more minimalistic outfits. You tried to tone it down with simple accessories, which was a good instinct, but I still think this dress just isn’t for you.

CAT DEELEY in Los Angeles
dress by Tadashi Shoji, shoes by Michael van der Ham

Photo: tomandlorenzo.com

Styling, like fit, is everything, dear readers. This is a pretty awesome dress ruined by awful shoes, terrible hair, and a smear of a hooker’s lipstick.

MALIN AKERMAN in Los Angeles
gown by BCBG Max Azria

Photo: Imeh Akpanudosen/Getty

Better for a beach bonfire party than a red carpet, but from Malin, I’ll take what I can get.

DAKOTA FANNING in London
gown by Stella McCartney, purse by Lanvin, shoes by Jimmy Choo

Photo: Dave J. Hogan/Getty

Dakota, no. I love you, and I’m proud that you’re approaching adulthood with the same poise and grace with which you handled your childhood in the spotlight. But second-skin sequins are not for brilliant young actresses like yourself. Those are for people who can’t get famous on talent alone. You’re Dakota Fucking Fanning – I don’t need to see your bellybutton or know which of your tits naturally points which way through your dress. Also, that purse is ugly and your toenail polish is atrocious. I judge because I care.

AMERICA FERRERA in Los Angeles
gown by Rachel Roy, shoes by Brian Atwood

Photo: FameFlynet

Seriously? The bodice is at least a size too big and the skirt is at least a foot too long. The color is great and the hair is fabulous, but FIT, ladies! Do not neglect it!

AMERICA FERRERA at the ALMA Awards
gown by Carlos Miele

Your dress does not need wings.

LADY GAGA in London
gown by Ulyana Sergeenko

Photo: PacificCoastNews.com

I can get behind a ginormous red trench coat-dress in a Mary Poppins-on-acid sort of way. But whatever poor animal she has strapped around her neck is destroying my ability to look at anything else.

LEA MICHELE in Los Angeles
gown by Naeem Khan, shoes by Giuseppe Zanotti

Photo: Norman Scott/Startraksphoto.com

Lea: STAY AWAY FROM THE SELF-TANNER. Other things to avoid: dip-dying hair products, berry lipstick when your skin is still this shade of orange, suede coral platforms with rainforest-printed gowns, and bangs.
