New faces! Cute couples! Pop superstars!
KATY PERRY at the Starkey Hearing Foundation Gala in St. Paul
gown by Chloé, shoes by Jimmy Choo
I don’t think I’ve seen Katy wear something I actually give two fucks about in at least a year, so she gets a very special mazel tov for making it to the top of my list. I’m not sold on the shoes – I’d have either picked a multicolor sequined shoe to match the embellished straps, or gone a non-sparkly route altogether. But those straps are so awesome, I can’t give this ensemble anything but love. Also, it’s August, when celebrities are too busy nude tanning on the beaches of St. Barth’s while drinking diamond-infused margaritas, or whatever rich people do on vacations, to give a shit about the red carpet.
REBECCA FERGUSON at the Mission: Impossible London screening
jumpsuit by Diane von Furstenberg
This is Rebecca Ferguson’s inaugural appearance on Democracy Diva, and I’m already a fan of this Swedish actress. She scored a phenomenal outfit – a jumpsuited twist on DVF’s signature wrap dress – and knows how to serve FACE. Plus, she’s capable of putting up with Tom Cruise for however long it took to film MI: Rogue Nation. So she’s basically a superhero.
REBECCA FERGUSON at the Mission: Impossible New York premiere
gown by Vivienne Westwood
A little less interesting, but a solid effort nonetheless.
BEYONCÉ KNOWLES in New York City
dress by Dolce & Gabbana, sunglasses by Ray-Ban, purse by Dannijo, shoes by Stuart Weitzman
hi bey could i borrow that purse like just for a second please and then maybe keep it forever kthanxbai
KIERNAN SHIPKA at The Gift Los Angeles premiere
dress by Valentino, shoes by Giuseppe Zanotti
Kiernan Shipka: forever my personal style icon, even if she’s more than a decade younger than me.
BELLA THORNE on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon
dress by House of Holland
I don’t think I’ve ever seen Bella Thorne in anything less than awful – her red carpet game is so unfortunate – so this actually blew my mind. Because, you know, I actually LIKED it! I don’t think the straight-out-of-Barbie’s-wardrobe shoes were the best idea, but I’d wear this dress in a heartbeat.
NICOLE RICHIE at Jimmy Kimmel Live in New York City
dress by Bec & Bridge, shoes by Stuart Weitzman
Gunmetal gray and a fabric that flows like liquid? Hello, gorgeous.
CATE BLANCHETT at the Helpmann Awards in Sydney
dress by Carl Kapp
A cool dress, but the under-accessorizing makes me sad. A-list actresses have no need for basic black peep-toe pumps. Those are for plebeians like us, who don’t have access to thousands of pairs of designer shoes at a moment’s notice.
OLIVIA PALERMO at the Revolve and Moët Ice event in the Hamptons
jumpsuit by Lovers & Friends, shoes by Francesco Russo
Love the hair – messy braids tend to bother me at movie premieres and more formal events, but when it’s August and you’re in sight of a pool, this is the best hairstyle possible. And her jumpsuit is fly.
MIRANDA KERR at the Zimmermann store opening in Los Angeles
dress by Zimmermann, shoes by Jimmy Choo
This is only pretty because the woman wearing it is so goddamn beautiful. This actually just looks like the curtains in my grandmother’s old apartment in Queens.
TAYLOR SWIFT
blouse by Babaton for Aritzia, purse by Michael Kors
She can do better. This is basically what I wore to work on Friday, and I am actually not a super-famous pop star, much as that may surprise you.
ELSA PATAKY and CHRIS HEMSWORTH at the Vacation Los Angeles premiere
Elsa’s dress by Alberta Ferretti, shoes by Brian Atwood
Chris’s suit by Prada
Her outfit: bleh. The (lack of) color does nothing for her, and this silhouette is better-suited to a teenager than a 39-year-old woman.
His outfit: YUM YUM YUM PURPLE SHOES YUM GORGEOUS YUM.
MINKA KELLY at the Zimmermann store opening in Los Angeles
top and skirt by Zimmermann
I’d like the top as a swimsuit, and the skirt as a dustruffle, but none of this actually works as clothing.
JANUARY JONES at the Zimmermann store opening in Los Angeles
top and skirt by Zimmermann
This is how you destroy a perfectly good skirt by adding too many things that look exactly like said skirt. The Hostess cupcake frosting on her sleeves will give me nightmares, and that fire-engine red lipstick is definitely not her friend.
KATE MARA at the Fantastic Four Atlanta Screening
top and skirt by Louis Vuitton
I didn’t know Peter Pan wore Louis Vuitton! Maybe their stuff is more affordable in Neverland. That explains it.
CHANEL IMAN at the Zimmermann store opening in Los Angeles
gown by Zimmermann
Even the obscenely stunning runway model Chanel Iman cannot make this dress work. A general rule: two slits are NOT better than one, and two slits with the world’s most gigantic keyhole cut-out are even worse.
JENNIFER LOPEZ in the Hamptons
dress by Bao Tranchi
Couldn’t find a photo from behind, but just trust me when I say her ass is on FULL display. Which is fine, but maybe if there was just ONE part of this dress that wasn’t see-though or completely absent, I’d be able to have something positive to say about it. But as is… nope. For God’s sake, even her SHOES are sheer. Somehow, the see-through shoes reek more of desperation than anything else.
